THE controversial Holyrood building exerted such a strain on those involved that two of the leading figures had to leave work because of serious illness as the construction project entered its final stages, it emerged last night.

The final part of the BBC documentary series, The Gathering Place, was aired last night, revealing that John Gibbons, the Executive's lead architect, and Alan Mack, in charge of the builders Bovis, had to take considerable time off in the final year of the project because of health problems.
