BILL MCGREGOR, the general secretary of the Headteachers' Association of Scotland: "The minister may have changed, but the same challenges remain. He needs to make sure there are enough staff in place, particularly in secondary schools. Funding is still a huge issue - a lot of education money given to councils still doesn't reach schools. There is also still a huge pace of change as well, and it wouldn't do any harm for it to slow down a bit."

TOM KELLY, the chief executive of the Association of Scottish Colleges: "There are two main challenges facing Hugh Henry in his new role. One is schools and colleges trying to stop children falling into the classification of being Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEETs). As much as possible is being done in schools, but some people will slip through the net and colleges have a role to play too. The other challenge facing the new education minister is to raise the status of vocational education, in relation to the more traditional academic subjects."
