UNLESS you're a history scholar who knows a thing or II about antique cultures, chances are that your perception of ancient Rome has been shaped entirely by the movies. You'll picture an indolent Emperor Nero, probably played by Peter Ustinov, being fed grapes by a bunch of glamorous concubines ripe with California tans. Or a sweaty Kirk Douglas in a fetching skirt earnestly proclaiming something very important to a shower of grunting extras.
