AMONG the major champions, Ryder Cup captains and legends of the game appearing in the dollars 3 million UBS Cup for the over-40s at Kiawah Island next month is a taciturn Scot who spent most of his life as a club professional. In the 12-man Rest of the World side taking on the Americans, which features more Scots than any other nationality, it's a safe bet Colin Montgomerie, Sandy Lyle and Sam Torrance will be recognised instantly. John Chillas' story, however, may not be so familiar to the local galleries in South Carolina.

While to suggest life began at 50 for Chillas would be unfairly dismissive of a career spent as the pro at Glenbervie, competing on the Tartan Tour and teaching some of Scotland's best golfers - as the coach of the University of Stirling team he was a key influence on the career of Catriona Matthews - nevertheless the golfer's time as a senior has sparked his most consistent form.
