BRITAIN'S most northerly inhabited island was facing a bleak and uncertain future last night, after the government announced plans to mothball the RAF's radar station on Unst as part of a review that will result in more than 330 jobs being axed at defence bases across Scotland.

RAF Saxa Vord, which has been the main employer on the Shetland island for almost 60 years, since it became a vital part of Britain's early-warning Cold War defence network, will effectively close next April with the loss of 111 jobs, including 69 service posts. The closure will result in the population of Unst being cut by almost a third.
