ALAN Johnson yesterday played down speculation that he was launching a covert leadership bid with his call for sweeping electoral reform.

The Health Secretary - tipped to succeed Gordon Brown as Labour leader - insisted an article calling for proportional representation was simply outlining ways to empower the voter, rather than paving the way for Mr Brown to be ousted.
