Can We Justify Euthanasia for Very Ill Babies?

IT IS a rare and unusual day when a college of medical practitioners calls for permission to deliberately hasten the death of their patients, but the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology (RCOG) did exactly that when they argued for the euthanasia of seriously disabled newborn babies last week.

The proposal follows the increasing number of such children surviving because of medical advances, and would, say the RCOG, take greater account of the emotional and financial cost of caring for a sick child.
