AS A gesture of indifference to difficult economic times, Manchester City's reported willingness to pay AC Milan almost GBP 100 million for Kaka seems as extravagant, insensitive and obscene as Marie Antoinette's famous exhortation to starving, bread-less Parisian peasants to eat cake.

The additional detail, that the great Brazilian would be paid GBP 500,000 a week - a staggering GBP 26 million a year - simply confirms that the Sheikh Mansour-led Abu Dhabi United group, owners of the English Premier League club, are adherents to the plutocratic principle that every man has his price. It is unlikely, therefore, that the default setting of their attitude to buying would be able to compute and then rationalise Kaka's rejection of the offer.
