ON A chilly morning in February the TOGs were near to tears. "Terry's Old Geezers" as the DJ has christened his millions of silver-haired fans, feared the worst. The show had cut abruptly into 15 minutes of sentimental music, including the Phil Collins track You'll Be In My Heart. Had Terry Wogan, they worried, suddenly been called to address the great microphone in the sky?

No. As the legendary broadcaster took delight in telling listeners upon his return, steam from a nearby gym had set off the fire alarms, forcing a swift evacuation. The king of the breakfast show was very much alive and now back on his throne, buoyed up on the backs of almost eight million loyal listeners for whom each morning is unbearable unless accompanied by his mellifluous voice and his Radio 2 show.
