PROVIDING the perfect response to a rallying call from Colin Montgomerie earlier in the week, Paul Lawrie and Steven O'Hara established a strong Scottish presence at the top of the leaderboard in the first round of the GBP 1.4million Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles yesterday.

Reaping the rewards of the work he's been doing with new coach Bob Torrance over the last six weeks, former Open champion Lawrie took pride of place in Perthshire as he set the pace with a five- under-par 67, part of which was crafted in the worst of the conditions as the rain hammered down on the PGA Centenary Course later in the day.
