WHY write a novel about Harold Wilson? For Mark Lawson, the answer goes right back to an English lesson at school. The class were busy writing haiku poetry when, for the first time ever, the headmaster used the tannoy system to interrupt classes with a newsflash informing the school that the prime minister had resigned. "It was quite scary, almost Orwellian. It was quite a right-wing kind of place, and the whole school was shaken by cheering".

The young Lawson didn't join in. To him, Wilson was the first politician he'd been interested in. And though he didn't yet realise it, the seeds of his fascination were already sown. No-one else in mainstream politics this century had ever given up office voluntarily. What made Wilson so different?
