QUEEN Margaret University, outside Edinburgh, may be an unfamiliar name to some, but it is the new title of an institution that has been in operation since 1875. It prides itself on its vocational focus and remaining small in student numbers to ensure educational quality - both laudable aims. It has just moved to the first purpose-built campus constructed in Scotland for 30 years. And in a recent UK survey, QMU was ranked in the top ten of Scottish universities.

By any standard, 2008 should be a golden year for QMU. But yesterday, without prior consultation, staff in its flagship drama unit were told that acting courses and associated teaching in stage design and lighting are to be closed.
