Summary
THE Prime Minister's monthly press conference yesterday was a classic case of pouring oil on troubled waters. But it remains to be seen if Mr Blair's soothing balm will have that desired result, or merely add to the flames of political discontent sweeping the Labour Party.
First, the Prime Minister radically changed the form of words he and his close allies (most notably John Reid) had been using since last week's disastrous election results. No longer is it a case of Tony Blair serving a "full term" - words that drive the Chancellor and his allies apoplectic. Now Mr Blair says he will resign "soon enough" to give Gordon Brown time to "bed in".
