Summary
COUNTING reservists, some 225,000 men and women are now serving in the British armed forces, more than 30,000 of them abroad at any one time. Their job is not an easy one and their numbers are small relative to the tasks they face.
These men and women are fighting two major wars in far-flung corners of the globe. They are also engaged in major peace-keeping activities in the political tinderbox that is the Balkans. In the Caribbean they can be found combating drug smugglers. Closer to home, they spent the last 25 years in Ireland protecting ordinary British citizens from the IRA.
