IT IS often only after a serious crime that those most closely involved can see the tell-tale signs leading up to the offence. But in the horrific case of Karen Dewar - the 16-year-old childcare student whose killer, Colyn Evans, attempted to dismember her body before dumping it in a wheelie-bin and setting fire to it - the evidence of previous offensive behaviour appears to be both flagrant and substantial.

Today, we carry a detailed account of the experience of a woman neighbour of Evans who warned the police "time and time again" that Evans was taking an unnatural and perverted interest in her son. Her account is as resonant for its unsettling familiarity with the public as for its galling detail. She tells of Evans's obsessive behaviour, culminating in 2002 in a sexual attack on her son, which she reported to the police. But neither this incident, nor her previous numerous complaints to the police, resulted in action.
