Summary
NIGEL Lawson, Margaret Thatcher's Chancellor between 1983 and 1989, is something of a polymath. A financial journalist to trade, he has turned out some interesting books since he gave up the red boxes, including The Nigel Lawson Diet Book and what is probably the best insider's view of the Treasury to date. His latest work, published tomorrow, is entitled A Cool Look at Global Warming.
Lawson is also a former energy secretary so we should treat his polite scepticism seriously. He accepts that there has been a warming of the planet during the past quarter century and that some of this is due to a man-made greenhouse effect. He concedes that if we go on pumping into the atmosphere "all other things being equal, the world is likely to get warmer".
