AGRICULTURE is vital to the Scottish economy: it is widely recognised as being worth as much as 10 per cent of gross national product when downstream activities are considered.

However, there have been real problems, especially in the hills and uplands, in recent years where profitability has been virtually negligible. This has resulted in the numbers of productive herds and flocks of cattle and sheep falling sharply. Around one million ewes have disappeared.
