SCOTS are paying too much for gas and electricity because of "misplaced loyalty" to local suppliers, a consumer group warned yesterday as MSPs called for action in the wake of massive price increases by ScottishPower.

Fewer customers switch to cheaper suppliers in Scotland than elsewhere in Britain, according to SimplySwitch, a firm that provides consumer advice. A spokesman said: "A lot of people aren't switching because they don't want to abandon a Scottish company. Scots are generally quite loyal to Scottish suppliers - but it is misplaced loyalty because they could be saving hundreds of pounds through other options.
