KENNY MacAskill, the justice secretary, has expressed support for moves by Scotland's largest police force to shed senior officers to free money for front-line policing.

The Scotsman revealed yesterday that Strathclyde Police were planning cuts in superintendent posts with the aim of using the GBP 2 million salary savings for new recruits.
