THE most widespread outbreak of industrial action since the 1926 General Strike is set to bring much of Scotland to a halt later this month, after local government workers voted to walk out in a bitter row with the government over pensions.

Thousands of schools across Scotland could be forced to close, bus services in Edinburgh will be restricted, the Glasgow Underground will be shut down and there will be no toll collectors on the Forth Road Bridge, as a result of the UK-wide action backed by 1.5 million workers.
