FOR all Joan Bakewell's claims that she is slowing down, the evidence is most definitely to the contrary. Glancing through the 72- year-old's portfolio of activities before going to meet her, I find she is currently engaged in a new book, a collection of journalism, a radio series and radio play, charity work, committees, judging panels and has recently accepted an honorary professorship. She calls this slowing down?

Bakewell was appointed honorary professor in the department of film and media studies at Stirling University last week, by the department head, Professor John Izod. She's clearly delighted by it, partly at the prospect of working with the students, and partly that her swift escalation of the academic ladder has made a great joke between her and her daughter, who is currently slogging away at her own PhD.
