Summary
SO, MARSEILLES is to become Glasgow's sixth - yes, sixth - twin city. The honour is already shared by Nuremberg, Turin and Havana as well as Rostov-on-Don in Russia and the Chinese city of Dalian. To some this latest coupling might seem like a partnership too far, but whereas the parallels between the Dear Green Place and some of her longer-standing overseas partners might be a little tricky to find, the similarities with Marseilles are more obvious. Both are port cities with port areas in need of regeneration, both suffer from more than their fair share of organised crime, both are inhabited by people who treat football like a religion - and there's more. According to rapper Soom T, a member of the Glasgow- based hip-hop collective Monkeytribe, the music scenes in the two cities also have a lot in common.
Last September, Soom and Monkeytribe travelled to Marseilles to play at the Marsatac Festival with other up-and-coming Glasgow artists, including Data Panik, Disciplines of Panic Earth, and Soma's Alex Smoke.See the full content of this document
