SINCE being handed control of Rangers for Scottish Cup ties last season, Ally McCoist has enjoyed an eight-match unbeaten record which included winning the trophy at Hampden last May.

In serving his apprenticeship under Walter Smith, the Rangers assistant manager's deployment for both team instructions and media duties in the competition is significant to chairman Sir David Murray's long term hope that McCoist will one day be in a position to take charge on a permanent basis.
