JACK McConnell yesterday named his close ally Andy Kerr as the man to head off an impending crisis in the NHS - but there was uproar among campaigners when the new health minister insisted there would be no change to Scottish Executive policy.

The Scottish Health Campaign Forum immediately vowed to step up its protests and to press ahead with plans to put up candidates against Labour MPs at next year's election unless Mr Kerr meets its demands.
