JACK McConnell cut a lonely figure on the Normandy beaches yesterday as he took his place at the commemorations for the 60th anniversary of D-Day. Given the last-minute nature of his decision to abandon plans to attend a golf club dinner in St Andrews, and travel to France instead, there was no time to bring along the tight clique of advisers and spin doctors who normally accompany the First Minister.

Mr McConnell's office yesterday insisted the tight security restrictions surrounding the event precluded such arrangements and that all UK ministers were in the same position.
