COMPARED to the elite drama on offer at Old Trafford, what was being touted as a play-off for the UEFA Cup at Hampden Park between Hibs and Dunfermline looked, and sounded, like a schoolboys' international. This impression was not altered when the camera cut to Adam Hammill, the scampish Dunfermline winger who looks young enough to be eligible for such a fixture and who was the nearest Sky had to a Ronaldo-esque ratings winner.
That alone proved how marked the contrast was between the two major matches being staged in Britain last night. But there were plenty of other ways to distinguish between them, including the tinny rattle which passed for an atmosphere at a Scottish Cup semi- final that had been brutalised by the SFA. The fans of both teams considered the venue remote, but, no matter, they were asked to return for the second time in nine days. Naturally, many declined.
