FORTH he wobbled, to take up his position for First Minister's Questions. It was Eck Salmond's first time in the hot seat. Across the passageway, Jack McConnell eyed him like a snake might regard an elephant: with envy, malice and a little fear.

He hissed the words "first minister". Once, the title was his. King of the Jungle. Now he was just a seething serpent with a bendy backbone. He bared his fangs and deployed that old poisonous ploy: the demand for a "yes or no" answer. Jack himself, the original Great Prevaricator, had never given such an answer. Let's see how the new boy would do.
