TODAY'S English papers will be full of predictions, punditry and almanacs concerning the likely outcome of this season's Premier League. It's not so much an inexact science as a dark art, gauging the relative effectiveness of the Big Four, and estimating the potential impact of that team of all the moody talents, Manchester City.

Some voices carry more authority though. None more so than the man who has been there since the beginning, that Methuselah of Manchester Sir Alex Ferguson. The only thing he has forgotten in a decade and a half of Premier League combativeness is how to be candid. His pronouncements are now so cast up in cryptic mind- games, self-serving propaganda and carefully-timed character assassination that you need a team of diviners, like temple interpreters at Delphi, to figure out exactly what he means.
