FAY WELDON thinks we've got it licked. At last year's Edinburgh Literary Festival she told an adoring audience: "By and large, women are in charge of their own lives, can choose to marry or not to marry, to have children or not have children."

Well, up to a point, Ms Weldon. While women today undoubtedly have more freedom than ever before, our life choices are still, it seems, dictated not so much by being the mere business of being female, but by the type of females we are.
