AN INDEPENDENT MSP yesterday secured a promise from the Executive to ensure the Queen's Balmoral Estate in Aberdeenshire is covered by new laws to protect wild animals.

Dennis Canavan, MSP for Falkirk West, had drafted an amendment to the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Bill to bring the Queen into line with all Scots landowners, because the draft legislation - aimed at protecting wildlife and the environment - does not cover Balmoral since it is used by the Queen in her private capacity.
