The Frenchman, known to his admirers as 'The Magician', has such a range of shots that he can either baffle you into submission or force you to play with more versatility than is common on grass.

Certainly, anyone who complains that lawn tennis (as opposed to clay or hardcourt tennis) is a one-dimensional, service-dominated sport would have thought otherwise after yesterday's entertaining encounter. Murray was stretched by the French veteran, made to equal him for finesse and better him for power, before emerging as a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 winner.
