MICHAEL O'Neill may have missed out on the Hibernian job but the Northern Irishman has been handed compensation in the form of a chance to pit his wits against Real Madrid next month. O'Neill's Shamrock Rovers side are set to take on the Spanish club in what could serve as Cristiano Ronaldo's debut following his GBP 80 million move from Manchester United.

Real Madrid have adopted rivals' Barcelona preference for spending pre-season training in northern Europe. Following the Catalan club's successful spells in St Andrews, Real have based themselves at Carton House in Maynooth, County Kildare between 13 and 22 July.
