SMITH & Nephew, the blue-chip medical devices firm, became the latest victim of the turbulent market-place yesterday as its shares shed 10 per cent on the back of disappointing sales.

The group, often seen as a growth prospect due to supposed opportunities in orthopaedics, lost 52.5p to 481p as business slowed in its second quarter.
