THE tennis racket with which Andy Murray won the US Junior Open, Rhona Martin's Olympic-winning curling stone and Steve Hislop's Ducati motorbike have seen action thousands of miles apart. From today, however, these and other historic sporting objects - including, for a time, the Calcutta Cup - can be seen together in the one place: the new Sporting Scotland Gallery at the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

The site in the capital's Chambers Street is already home to the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame. Henceforth, besides paying homage to the members of that select band, those visiting the gallery can also learn more about the history and social context of sport at all levels.
