THE doomsday scenario for Scottish golf came to pass at Hoylake yesterday with Scotland not able to boast even a single mascot in the field making up the final rounds of the 135th Open championship. Never before in a previous 134 competitions, from Prestwick in 1860 to St Andrews last year, has this been a lament heard across the fairways.

After Scotland provided a record low of just four representatives at this year's Open this was a fresh blow to the home of golf's esteem.
