ONE Sunday morning in 1958, 12-year-old Judy Westwater packed a small case with her school books and uniform, a bar of soap and a comb and a few pieces of stolen fruit. Abandoned by her violent and abusive father in a residential hotel room in Johannesburg, and with no money to pay the rent owed to the landlord, she headed for the only place she could think of: the street.
