THE ATTRACT- ion of city life over a country existence can shift as you get older. Just as young adults gravitate to a city in search of jobs, love, alcohol and excitement, most life-changes after the age of 30 pull them back the other way. Indeed, one of the main benefits of metropolitan living disappears as soon you get past the need to buy a pizza at two in the morning.

But that's not all - most of the things that seemed so exciting when you were 20 begin to pale ten years later. A decent public transport system, great when you are a teenager or a very social drinker, isn't that tempting with a toddler and GBP 150 of supermarket shopping. Instead, lack of a parking space outside your own house makes you want to weep.
