THE psychological advantage or otherwise stemming from the loss of a manager prior to a big game is an old debate, but one which gained relevance yesterday when Walter Smith heard the news Crvena Zvezda, better known as Red Star Belgrade, had sacked their coach.

It is, of course, pertinent in view of Rangers' meeting with the Serbian side on Tuesday at Ibrox in the first leg of their third qualifying-round tie in the Champions League. Smith was taken aback and wondered whether Red Star might gain an "up-lift" from the remarkable decision to fire Bosko Djurovski just 24 hours before their league season begins.
