Summary
THE expression "one man's opinion is as good as another's" has a lot to answer for. In this brave new world of bloggers and citizen journalists, everyone can publish their opinions online at the click of a mouse and, at times, it seems as if pretty much everyone does.
Type the words "review" and "I Am Legend" (the title of the new Will Smith movie) into Google and you get over 25 million results. Obviously not all of those will be reviews of the film, but several hundred probably will be. Faced with such an overwhelming sea of opinions, what's a poor, befuddled consumer to do? Well, you could add up the star ratings awarded by all those online critics, divide the total by the number of reviews and thereby calculate some sort of global average rating for the film. But are all those opinions really equally valid? Inevitably, some will be more insightful than others.
