Like most people, I prefer my meal dead when it goes into my mouth. If you share this view, you might want to skip the following anecdote from my recent trip to Japan. I was sitting in Kumamoto's newest restaurant with my friend Yuko, awaiting the first dish of what she promised would be a meal to remember. She wasn't wrong.

A small clay jug was placed on the table, filled with sake. A classic Japanese fish dish, a speciality of the Kyushu region, was then served. The fish was skewered with pieces of meat cut from its sides. "Ah, sashimi, and a nice touch using the fish as a garnish," I thought.

Out of This World

The flesh was melt-in-the-mouth and slipped down easily. But it very nearly made a quick return when the fish, or should I say the remains of the fish, suddenly mouthed a last-gasp protest. It was still alive!

I was startled, to say the least. Yuko found this hilarious. After three cups of sake, consumed in quick succession, I too could see the funny side.
