THE West Lothian patois was echoing across the Rance estuary from St Malo as Broxburn boy Michael Caton- Jones relaxed at the Grand Hotel in Dinard.
Caton-Jones, whose latest film, Shooting Dogs, about the Rwanda genocide, had a powerful impact at the festival devoted to "le cinema britannique", has become more reflective, according to our man with the clapperboard, Richard Mowe. But beneath the bluff (or should that be gruff?) Broxy exterior, the film director has always been "a sensitive and perceptive soul at heart", or so John Hurt told Mr Mowe. Hurt has known CJ for 16 years - since he played Stephen Ward in Scandal, based on the Profumo affair. The pair have been reunited for Shooting Dogs, which was shot in Kigali, using locations where the atrocities took place. Survivors were involved as supporting players, extras and crew. Caton-Jones told our man that Shooting Dogs is not going to be "the date movie" of the year, but then neither is the sequel to Basic Instinct, believe it or not. It is his gun-for-hire project, and is out in March next year. Caton- Jones mused over the idea of a double-bill, but only briefly, and explained with Broxburn pragmatism: "You have to do something to pay the bills - and to support ventures like Shooting Dogs."See the full content of this document
