IN THE GREAT COMPENDIUM of cliche, few images come much more used and abused than that of the bagpipe (cue havering sub-cliches: "skirl", "blaw", "din", plus wobbly choruses of Scotland the Brave). Yet Scottish piping has never been in such vigorous health, not just in terms of numbers playing but also in a broadening out to wider audiences.
Curiously, Scotland has never really had a full-blown festival devoted to its national instrument - although there is, of course, an established calendar of major band and solo competition events.
