BAHAMIAN Pirate ensured the skull and crossbones was flying proudly over York yesterday when the old man of the party landed the Nunthorpe Stakes, and the GBP 116,000 worth of treasure that went with it, for sprint king David Nicholls.

At the age of nine, the gelding was by far the elder statesman of the 12-strong field which eventually went to post for the dash down the Knavesmire, but he refused to let his advancing years, his 16-1 starting price or the fact that he'd been found wanting in 25 previous attempts in Group company rain on his parade.
