GORDON Brown had his first electoral victory yesterday - fuelling activists' appetite for an early election next spring.

Labour's majorities were slashed in Ealing Southall and Sedgefield, but the swing was to the Liberal Democrats, not the Conservatives, who trailed in third place in both polls.
