Practical Wisdom: Develop Some Sartorial Savvy

Summary

It was the advertisement that did it for me. "Pencil skirts size eight to 34, 10 per cent off," it said (10 per cent off the price, not the skirt, presumably). Picture for a moment a size 34 skirt and its putative relationship to a pencil. There are mature Douglas Firs that have a better claim to the term. Like those Hello! magazine articles that start "Happily married to her fifth husband..." it is beyond euphemism. The fact that someone somewhere is making pencil skirts in anything over a size 8 is not so much a triumph of optimism over experience as a triumph of optimism over semantics. A size 34 skirt is a small marquee. It is not a feat of design, but of engineering.

But then the flip side of fashion's ability to transport us into a realm of fantasy is its capacity to lull us into a state of utter self-delusion. Even though, in our heart of hearts, we know that the last time we looked fetching in shorts we were hanging off a wall- bar in an infant-school gymnasium, we are willing to contemplate them for a moment because they are "a key look".
