PRESSURE was mounting on the Scottish Executive last night over its plans for higher education funding after the principal of a top private school said the uncertainty was leading to growing concern among senior pupils eager to plan their futures.

David Gray, the principal of Mary Erskine School and Stewart's Melville College, said he was dismayed that Jim Wallace, the enterprise and lifelong learning minister, had still not announced how the Executive was intending to cope with the impact of top-up fees in England from 2006.
