SHARES in Ladbrokes and William Hill galloped ahead yesterday in the first stock market session after 100-1 outsider Mon Mome's extraordinary Grand National success on Saturday.

Britain's leading bookmakers admitted that the shock result - only the second 100-1 winner of the Grand National, following Foinavon in 1967 - was a boon for the industry. It was expected to spark a rash of broker profit upgrades for publicly quoted Ladbrokes and William Hill.
