HELMAND province is one of 34 which make up the nation of Afghanistan. In a population is 745,000, the majority are Pashtun, the nation's largest single ethnic group.

Pashtunwali is the indigenous code of conduct, which has three main parts: revenge (Badal), hospitality (Melmastia) and honour (Namus). The code of Melmastia is so strong that even the poorest Afghan will give a stranger his last piece of bread and tea and feel proud to do so.
