THE consultation document on the Scottish Executive's plans to ban junk food could not have been more stark. Scotland's children, it said bluntly, are too fat and do not get enough exercise. More than a quarter of boys and a third of girls do not get the recommended minimum level of physical activity.

Latest figures show that more than 65 per cent of Scots men and 59 per cent of women are either overweight or obese, with the rates among children in Scotland "rising rapidly". The Executive says that banning crisps, sweets and fizzy drinks from state schools is a necessary first step in attempting to reverse that depressing trend.
