THE buzz has been building on hybrid cars for years. They dangle the prospect of astonishingly good economy while mixing the cleanliness of an electric engine with the longer range of old- fashioned petrol.

While we still can't develop batteries safe and strong enough to take a car more than a few dozen miles, hybrids have beckoned as a serious alternative for the green-minded consumer. Here was a vehicle for recyclers or organic-food buyers who can't quite bring themselves to give up the open road.
